Despite some rain on Saturday April 23, 2005 some of the
local Cub Scouts and their parents from Pack 33 spent time cleaning up Dog Beach
adjacent to Manor Beach in the Village of Larchmont.
Every year the scouts participate on a local level to
Beautification Day, in keeping with tradition the scouts cleaned up the beach
area, which was in need of a Spring-cleaning. According to John Stackpole the
Cubmaster of Pack 33 “in a short time we are able to make a large impact, with
winter comes allot of debris that washes up on the beach, it’s an eye sore and
environmentally it’s not very good for the beach and surrounding waters.”
It is important to understand that most of the items that
wash up are not biodegradable and in any area not just our village this is going
to have a negative impact on the environment. Although the scouts can recognize
most of the items that wash up, it’s important to stress the importance of
properly disposing of these items from the start. One can or bottle not disposed
of properly can wash up on our beaches making them unattractive and unsafe.
As part of being a Cub Scout doing a service to the
community is part of the scouting way. This day along with the “Scouting for
Food” drive in the fall are just a couple of the ways we give back to the
community during the scouting year. |
